I live in a “Tesco town”, apparently. There are certainly a lot of Tesco stores around here.
I’ve not really felt bothered to give my opinion on the new Tesco Express in Stokes Croft before. For one reason, it’s several miles away from me. What do I care if they build 20 Tesco stores down there? This week though, I did a bit of reading up on the subject, after it was mentioned in Venue Magazine. It’s Easter Sunday (or “Easter Day” as the news have now started calling it), so this is the perfect time for me to rant about something that irritates me.
Today, in England, “larger” shops are not allowed to open. Small shops can open like Tesco Express, Sainsbury’s Local, and anything else which is less than 280 square metres in size. What a ridiculous rule that is.
Now I know it’s closed because it’s a religious day (for Christians), but as an atheist, why can’t I nip down to B&Q to get some nails, so I can finish a DIY job I’m doing in the garden? Continue reading Local Independent Businesses

There is always one arsehole, isn’t there?
There is somebody who has an axe to grind, and has taken it upon themselves to make a series of videos in which they put forward all sorts of notions to damage the reputations of me, Stephen Gardner, and James Wilson (the collective sometimes known as BJS Productions), by calling us (among other things) racists.
He made complaints to Ofcom about one broadcast I was a part of several years ago (about myself, BJS, and other individuals), and Ofcom did not uphold ANY of his complaints. I’m an innocent man, and I’ve had it proven from the radio regulator. Continue reading I Have A Stalker and I’m Not A Racist

First, someone sent me a link to this page, which is all a video Samsung produced, which uses actors, masquerading as non-actors, to promote a product. My first thought when watching the video though, was “wtf is wrong with the sound?!”

All this talk of bad customer service, and Mary Portas’ online poll has reminded me of an event that happened a few weeks back. (Btw – no surprise with that poll that John Lewis is near the top, and PC World/Comet near the bottom. Although I am surprised you can’t “add” stores – only pick from their existing list. And the Apple store isn’t in there).
A few weeks ago, I went to The Lanes. This is a non-chain bowling place in Bristol, that my girlfriend and I have been told is much nicer than Bowlplex/Megabowl, and does amazing milkshakes. I’m still not convinced that either of those statements are true. Continue reading The Lanes
Tonight sees the start of a new tv series where Mary Portas tries to help get the public get better customer service, and show up how crap some businesses are in this area. Which is ironic, given what happened to me this lunchtime.
For a while now, I’ve been working in Bradley Stoke. If you’re looking to take a lunch break around the 30minute mark, there’s not many places you can get to (and back from, obviously) in that sort of time. At the suggestion of my girlfriend, I have taken to going to the library with a book, as this is both free, and seems quite constructive. I hate queuing, but this lunchtime I went to a post office to send two parcels.
It was gone 2pm, and there was probably 10 people in front of me. After 5 minutes of queuing, there was the same number of people on front of me.
As I was planning on taking a 30minute lunch break, this wasn’t going to work.
Google Maps on my iPhone found me another post office, and only 5minutes away. Off I went to Post Office #2.
It, and every store in the area where it was (except a 7-11) was closed.
