What a Load of Rubbish in the Daily Mail

I could use that subject on any given day, but today specifically is the ongoing complaints in the Daily Mail about a “slop bucket in every home”, which they have been banging on about for too long already.

Here’s the istyosty address to read the full story without counting towards DailyMail’s statistics: http://istyosty.com/6jzp but for the moment, I’d like to focus on the end of the story.

Namely, this shower of balls:

Interesting.

I’ll try and ignore the fact that retired teacher Sylvia lives in a terraced house, all to herself (no mention of who the man is, so I will assume him to be one of the other outraged neighbours), so would have no problem housing at least twice as many bins. And the fact that she’s retired at 59 presumably means she has plenty of free time to moan to the newspapers about bin collections.

But is that the full story, really?
Do they HAVE TO put out NINE bins? Really? They’re being “forced” to? Continue reading What a Load of Rubbish in the Daily Mail

Hooters (Bristol) and Teenagers

I’m going to start right at the beginning by admitting I haven’t been to Hooters. Is this because I find it offensive, or because I think it degrades women? Neither, really.
Their big pull (aside from the ladies) seems to be beer and sports. I don’t like beer (or fizzy drinks at all, really), and I don’t like sports. I’m odd like that. So after I’ve eyed up the waitresses for 5 minutes, then what? I’ll have to eat/drink something.

I’ll probably go at some point because of mild curiosity. There’s a lot of talk online about this place, after all. Must be worth a look? There’s even a petition to have the place closed. Continue reading Hooters (Bristol) and Teenagers

GlossFM Returns on FM

I wasn’t sure whether to do a radio show on GlossFM this time around. I’ve done every broadcast since 2007, it takes up a lot of my time (no, really!), and May is actually turning out to be a pretty busy month for me.

I was spurred on a little bit by the fact that there’s a listener who really doesn’t like me, and rather than give him the satisfaction of thinking that his complaining has resulted in me not doing a show (as he’s got the wrong end of the stick in the past, like that), I worked out a way around it. It’s a bit like the film Private Parts. The haters listen to Howard Stern for even longer than the people who like him. I wouldn’t want to disappoint our most devoted listeners.

My usual co-presenter Stephen Gardner really wanted to do a show, so he’s doing a solo show every Saturday 1-4pm throughout May, on which I occasionally pop up. One week I might be there, one week I might not. I’ll still be helping on the production of the show, but I might not be there for all the live stuff. You’ll hardly even notice I’m missing. Probably.

If you’ve never heard Stephen, he has an impressive voice that is popular with the ladies, and some people mistake for Australian. He sounds like he’s putting it on, but I’ve known him for 10 years, and he always talks like that – so if it’s not his real voice, I think the joke’s on him by this point.

GlossFM, which has been broadcasting online for ages, returned to FM this week. If you’re in the South Gloucestershire area, you can listen on 87.7FM. If you’re not, for this whole month, you can listen from anywhere in the world, at glossfm.co.uk. When they stop broadcasting on FM, you can still listen online as they now broadcast all-year round (although the rest-of-year broadcast is UK-only).

So, that’s: Stephen Gardner – 1-4pm GMT – GlossFm – every Saturday (throughout May).

#StokesCroft #Tesco and #Riots

I live in a “Tesco town”, apparently. There are certainly a lot of Tesco stores around here.

I’ve not really felt bothered to give my opinion on the new Tesco Express in Stokes Croft before. For one reason, it’s several miles away from me. What do I care if they build 20 Tesco stores down there? This week though, I did a bit of reading up on the subject, after it was mentioned in Venue Magazine. I Have A Stalker and I’m Not A Racist

There is always one arsehole, isn’t there?

There is somebody who has an axe to grind, and has taken it upon themselves to make a series of videos in which they put forward all sorts of notions to damage the reputations of me, Stephen Gardner, and James Wilson (the collective sometimes known as BJS Productions), by calling us (among other things) racists.

He made complaints to Ofcom about one broadcast I was a part of several years ago (about myself, BJS, and other individuals), and Ofcom did not uphold ANY of his complaints. I’m an innocent man, and I’ve had it proven from the radio regulator. Continue reading I Have A Stalker and I’m Not A Racist

Vacation, Vacation, Vacation and SuperScrimpers

I’ve had a few days of seeing other people produce relatively poor work. First, someone sent me a link to this page, which is all a video Samsung produced, which uses actors, masquerading as non-actors, to promote a product. My first thought when watching the video though, was “wtf is wrong with the sound?!”

My EARS! How does a technology company produce something that poor?

But what of the shows mentioned in the title? Continue reading Vacation, Vacation, Vacation and SuperScrimpers

Text Style Choices

I was looking at something on YouTube this morning, and ended up watching a clip of the still-brilliant-all-these-years-later Brass Eye. This bit appeared on-screen:

From the "Decline" episode

And then I thought “that looks familiar. I’ve seen that kind of some-bold-some-not, some-uppercase-some-not, half-underlined style quite recently somewhere.” And then it hit me. Here it is:

StartUp. StartUP. Start-up? That.

Or is this a very comMON way of wriTING logos that is used all the time but I’ve NOt noTICED unTIL Now?
